For this project we first learned about Vincent Van Gogh and his famous painting Starry Night. We then created our own Starry Night Landscape Collages by ripping up tissue paper and gluing it to a large sheet of dark construction paper (black, blue, or purple). Then we covered the tissue paper with a gel medium to create a layer to draw on and left it to dry. Then we drew using oil pastels to create swirls of color like Van Gogh did. Then we discussed different landscapes we could use and used another dark piece of construction paper to draw a silhouette of the landscape. I chose to draw a city landscape and used a white oil pastel to draw windows. Then this silhouette is glued to the bottom of the Starry Night landscape.
Another activity I would do with the theme of Van Gogh and Starry Night is a Starry Night Melted Crayon Art. For this project all you need is crayons (black, blue, yellow, white, and purple work the best), aluminum foil, cereal box, acrylic paint, paint brushes, a cheese grater, and a warm oven. First made each student a canvas by covering the panel of a cereal box with aluminum foil. Then let each studnet paint their canvas with 4 different shades of blue and little bit of yellow, black, purple, and white. Each student can use as much or as little paint as they want to either fill their canvas or only make a few brush strokes. After the paint is dried, it is time to prepared the crayons for melting. The first step for this is to grate the crayons. If the student is able to grate the crayons, they can grate them right on the canvas. If the student is not able to grate the crayons and the teacher needs to grate them then they can be grated and put in piles for each color. The student can sprinkle the crayon shaving all over their painting leaving some space around the edges so they don't run off the edge. When the piece is how the artist wants it, it can be placed in the oven for 5 minutes at 200 degrees Farhenheint. After it is taken out of the oven, students need to be careful with the hot wax and can watch the wax cool and harden. The artworks could be hung on the wall if so desired.
Here is a picture of what the Starry Night Melted Crayon Art may look like.
