For this project, I drew a self portrait superhero. We discussed Pablo Picasso and his self portraits. We then discuss cartoon characters or more specifically superhero cartoon characters. An example of superhero cartoon characters are the Incredibles. Cartoon characters usually have specific features. They have big eyes, a little nose, and mouth that is either big or little. I first practiced drawing our self portrait, then I drew a self portrait of my heads. I was given the option of a couple of different body styles that I could trace. Then I colored my superhero suit. I choose orange and yellow for mine because her name is Night Girl and superheroes generally wear bright colors. Then I glued on the body and head of my superhero. The last thing I did for this project was write at least three sentences about my superhero.
For an extension activity of this project I would have students write a fictional story starring their superhero. The story should contain a plot and should be at least two pages hand written. If my students had iPads or computers we could use an app to create the story or I could have them type up their story. They will be asked to share their stories with their classmates.
